Lionel Train Gauge

The reason for the great success of Lionel trains is that they are replicas of the original trains and to bring in more joy and excitement for the model train lovers, the manufacturers introduced various gauges of Lionel trains.

Gauge trains, now called scale trains, are described by the width of the tracks they run on. For a discerning hobbyist, there are many kinds of gauge trains such as HO scale, N scale, Z gauge, O gauge and the G gauge.

HO gauge is 87th of the size of the real thing, known as 1:87 and are considered to be the most popular of all gauge trains. HO gauge also corresponds to common scales used in model race cars and are ideal to be played with the family in room.

N gauge is roughly 1:160 of the size of the real thing. Although, only few accessories were available for this gauge initially, the scenario is gradually changing. The smallest of all types of gauges is the Z gauge at 1; 220 of the real trains and are popularly known as desktop rail roads. In fact the entire Z gauge model could fit inside a briefcase but is a little expensive.

O gauge is a resemblance of the Lionel trains of 50s and 60s and is 1: 24th of the real size. O gauge takes up a lot of space and is a favorite for those who have the room. For even larger gauge, there is the G gauge and are most suitable for a huge outdoor garden layout. Big or small, Lionel model trains are a treat to watch.
